This past week I was helping run the opening program at our church Vacation Bible School. There were about 125 kids in attendance for the morning’s pep rally style program which began with a prize raffle. My sidekick eleven-year-old niece who was helping me onstage would randomly pull a raffle ticket out of a black top hat and then the child whose number she had called would wildly run up to the stage to dive into the prize box.
Most kids were so enthusiastic about winning a paddle ball set, a package of silly putty or a bubble wand that they could hardly contain their excitement. But, on this morning when my niece called the name of one dark-haired tiny little boy, he was terrified. A leader put her arm around him and tried enthusiastically to lead him up to the platform with tears of fear in his eyes.
My niece and I just wanted to bring him up, so he could pick a fun prize to take home with him, but he was likely scared of all the people and the microphone.
I think sometimes that is how we approach God. We, like this little boy, don’t understand what God is doing when he calls us up to the stage. We don’t want to have our life on display for others to see. But truly, God’s plan for calling us out of our comfort zone is to bring us up to His throne room where a basket full of prizes is waiting for us. They may not be tangible prizes, although they could be. Many of the prizes He wants to bless us with include peace, healing, and a closer walk with Him. The Lord calls us out as I called the little boy up to the microphone, to reward us with great blessings.
He also calls us to good works, yet God doesn’t intend for us to complete what he has called us to do alone. No, he sends people to come alongside us like the woman who put her arm around the little boy and walked him up to the stage.
His Word Tells Us…
Ephesians 2:10 –For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Jeremiah 29:11-13- For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

I hope today you will consider the ways in which God would call you out of your comfort zone to give you unfathomable blessings. Will you draw near to Him today? Take a few minutes to rest quietly and meditate on his love for you. Then ask Him to speak to you about what divine opportunities he is calling you to experience with Him.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I am so thankful to have you as my spiritual dad. I know I can talk to you about anything and I know you have plans for my life. Show me today how I can embark on your plans for me. Direct my steps and help me not to be afraid to answer to your call.
In Jesus’ Name,
